Position Description



The Department of History and the Center for the Study of Southern Culture seek applicants for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level to begin August 2024. This joint appointment is in 20th c. U.S. History with a concentration in the American South. Additional subfields may include public history, oral history, and/or African-American history. Faculty hired in this position will teach a 2:2 load in undergraduate and graduate courses as well as supervise graduate students in both History and Southern Studies.

About Our Programs



The Department of History features an active community of research and teaching scholars and students, offering undergraduate (BA) and graduate (MA, PhD) degrees in history. It also maintains academic and professional relationships with the African American Studies program, the Center for the Study of Southern Culture, the Croft Institute for International Studies, the McDonnell Barksdale Honors College, and the Sarah Isom Center for Women and Gender Studies. The Department of History sponsors the annual Porter L. Fortune History Symposium. Recent topics have included religion in the South, gender and politics in the South, the Civil Rights movement, and the South in the Caribbean. For more information:



The Center for the Study of Southern Culture, founded in 1977, defines its mission as investigating, documenting, interpreting, and teaching about the U.S. South through academic inquiry and publications, documentary studies of film, photography, and oral history, and public outreach programs. The cross- disciplinary Southern Studies faculty and the undergraduate and graduate degree programs (MA and MFA) are the core of the Center?s work. Its curricula incorporate traditional disciplines of the arts, humanities, and social sciences to form an interdisciplinary framework for studying the South. The Center promotes research on the region?s varied cultures by supporting the work of its faculty, staff, students, alumni, and visiting scholars. For more information:
